  • Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, swimwear, and quick-dry fabrics suitable for hot, humid weather, along with appropriate footwear for beaches, hills, and rocky areas.
  • Bring health, safety, and eco-friendly items like reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, motion sickness tablets, first-aid supplies, and sun protection for responsible and safe travel.

Koh Tao is a tropical island in Thailand and is known for its warm climate, relaxed beach lifestyle, and crystal clear waters. It is also one of the world’s top diving destinations and attracts millions of travelers every year for scuba certifications, fun dives, and marine exploration.

Because of this unique combination, packing for Koh Tao requires more planning than a typical beach vacation. Since it’s a small island with limited shopping options and frequent boat transfers, forgetting the important items or bringing unsuitable luggage can lead to inconvenience, extra cost, or missed activities.

And for that, your packing list should cover lightweight clothing for beach days, practical gear for ferry and boat travel, and specialized essentials for diving activities.

This guide will help you create a checklist so that you can pack the things correctly and get yourself prepared well for both life above the water and adventures below the surface.

Also, it’s separate from visa requirements, and you still need a valid visa or qualify for a visa exemption.

Tech & Travel Accessories Checklis

To fully capture your adventures and stay connected while on the island, packing the right travel accessories is important. From waterproof cameras and action cams to power banks and universal adapters, having the right gear ensures you can document your trip, stay charged, and make the most of your experience.

For that, check the following.

Must-have
  • 10,000mAh + power bank for long travel days.
  • Universal travel adapter (Thailand uses Type A/B/C).
  • 10L OR 15L Dry bag for boat trips.
Nice-to-have
  • Underwater camera (GoPro/TG-6).
  • Waterproof phone pouch for beach day.
  • Power strip for multiple device charging.

Money & Practical Items Checklist

While the island has ATMs and small shops, cash is often preferred, especially in local markets, dive shops, and for transportation like taxis or motorbike rentals. Credit and debit cards are accepted in some hotels and larger establishments, but it’s wise to carry Thai Baht in small denominations for convenience.

  • Cash(small denominations) – For essential street food (80+TBH) and local markets. 100 and 500 TBH notes are the most accepted.
  • Debit/Credit Cards – Used for large resorts and dive shops, though a 3% fee is common.
  • Small Daypack – A 15-20L pack is perfect for carrying your water.
  • Reusable Water Bottle – Use this to refill for free at any of the 14Trash Herp stations on the island.

Optional Activity-Based Checklist

Koh Tao is packed with activities that can make your trip truly unforgettable.
While none of these are strictly necessary, having a few thoughtful items on hand can enhance your experience and keep you comfortable throughout your adventures.

  • Snorkeling Trips – Pack your own snorkel set and a high-SPF rash guard to avoid “snorkeler’s back” sunburn.
  • Viewpoint Hikes – Bring a hat and sturdy trainers for the steep 15-minute climb to the John-Suwan viewpoint.
  • Long-Stay Travelers – Pack extra lightweight clothing and small laundry detergent sachets for quick washes between 24-hour laundry services.

What NOT to Pack?

Overpacking is one of the most common mistakes travelers make. So, here’s the list of a few items that you should not include in your checklist for what to pack for Koh Tao:

  • Heavy Luggage – The island’s main pier areas, like Mae Haad, often have uneven paths, small steps, and stone-paved streets that make rolling a 25kg+ hardshell suitcase difficult or even impossible. Instead, opt for lightweight, soft-sided backpacks or duffel bags with sturdy handles
  • Unnecessary Valuables – When traveling to Koh Tao, it is wise to leave expensive or easily lost items at home. Examples include gold or silver necklaces, rings, bracelets, high-end watches, designer sunglasses, and even expensive electronics that are not essential for the trip.
  • Excess Clothing – The island’s tropical climate means you will spend most of your time in swimwear, light shorts, and breathable tops. Items such as jeans, sweaters, jackets, hoodies, or thick dresses are unnecessary and can become uncomfortable in the heat and humidity. So, focus on carrying lightweight and quick-dry clothing only.
  • Non-Reef Safe Products – Chemical sunscreens are banned in many marine parks as they can damage the coral.

Important Note: In Thailand’s marine national parks, using the chemical sunscreens that contain ingredients like –

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • 4-methylbenzylidene camphor
  • Butylparaben

is strictly prohibited. These chemicals can damage coral reefs with bleach and harm marine life. Under the National Park Act 2019, violators may face fines of up to 100,000 baht (approximately $3,000 USD) .
