Renting a motorcycle in Koh Tao

There are numerous tales about renting motorcycles in Koh Tao. The reality is that it’s the preferred choice for many island visitors as it allows for comfortable mobility throughout the territory, though with certain precautions.

Koh Tao spans only 21 square kilometers, and exploring this area is much more convenient with a motorcycle than with a bicycle, another rental option. Renting a car isn’t advisable.
The number of companies renting motorcycles is extensive, and generally, the motorcycles are well-maintained, though it’s essential to check for any defects. Options range from scooters to semi-automatic or gear motorcycles. A license isn’t required for scooters. The more complex the motorcycle, the higher the rental price.

It’s worth noting that Koh Tao has two types of roads: main paved ones and sandy access roads to beaches with uneven terrain. Caution is necessary when driving, as skidding or encountering problems on inclines and declines due to the motorcycles’ low power is common.

Ensuring the motorcycle is in good condition is crucial when returning it to the rental company, as they often seek extra fees for damages.

As customers, it’s advisable to carefully review the rental contract. The rental company provides a contract detailing the motorcycle’s existing damages and the additional charges for any damages incurred during the rental period. Prices aren’t based on damaged areas but rather on the quantity of damages.

Motorcycle rental doesn’t include any insurance. To avoid additional charges, it’s essential to take photos before and after renting the motorcycle to demonstrate its condition upon return.

Regarding helmet use, compliance with the law is somewhat lenient, but encountering documentation checks for the vehicle and helmet isn’t uncommon. Since it’s a rental vehicle, only the rental form needs to be carried, but wearing a helmet at all times is advisable for safety.

How much oes it cost to rent a motorcycle in Koh Tao?

The rental price for motorcycles in Koh Tao varies, with rates typically ranging between 4 and 8 euros per day at small shops. Traffic in Koh Tao follows the left-hand rule, so encountering confused individuals, especially tourists unaccustomed to motorcycles, isn’t unusual.

While renting a motorcycle in Koh Tao is a great way to explore the island, it’s not the best place to learn to ride one. Unlike diving, where the island offers optimal conditions for beginners, riding a motorcycle on the island carries certain risks, especially if ridden with apprehension.

Requirements

The only requirement for renting a motorcycle in Koh Tao is leaving an official document, such as a passport, at the rental facility while in possession of the motorcycle. Legally, this is questionable. However, it’s common practice to leave it at motorcycle rental shops.

Many companies adhere to this policy of taking the passport as a deposit. Others may require a cash deposit, usually around 140 euros. If the passport is used as a deposit, it will be returned once the motorcycle is returned, even if additional fees were paid for damages.

The documentation for the scooter or motorcycle must always be present while riding it. In this case, as it’s a rental vehicle, the relevant rental contract should be carried.
