Key Takeaways

  • Scuba certifications do not expire. They are valid for life, no matter which agency issued them.
  • All major certifications (RAID, PADI, SSI, NAUI) are accepted at dive centers in Koh Tao.
  • If you have not dived in six months or more, a refresher is strongly recommended before open water diving.
  • La Bombona Diving offers the Reboot Course for returning divers. It costs 2,500 THB and runs as a full day from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.
  • The Reboot Course includes equipment, theory, a shallow water skills session, a fun dive, a boat trip, snacks, and a Reboot certification.

So, you got scuba certified a few years ago. Maybe it was during a holiday, or perhaps you earned your certification back home. Now you’re planning a trip to Koh Tao and wondering whether your scuba certification is still valid.

The good news is that your scuba certification does not expire, whether it’s from RAID, PADI, SSI, NAUI, or another recognised training agency. However, if you haven’t dived in a while, you may be asked to complete a refresher dive before joining fun dives or more advanced courses.

In this guide, you’ll learn how scuba certification validity works, when it’s a good idea to take a refresher dive in Koh Tao, and what to expect from La Bombona Diving’s Reboot Course.

Do Scuba Certifications Expire?

Do Scuba Certifications Expire

No. Scuba certifications do not expire.

Whether you were certified through RAID, PADI, SSI, NAUI, or any other major dive agency, your recreational certification is valid for life. There is no expiry date on your dive card. You do not need to renew it, retest, or redo your course.

This applies to all recreational levels. Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and specialty certifications are all valid forever.

So if you got certified five years ago and never dove again, your certification is still recognized worldwide.

How Long Does Scuba Certification Last?

Your certification lasts your entire lifetime. Once issued, it never becomes invalid. Here is a quick overview of common certification types and their validity:

Certification Level

Valid For

Open Water Diver

Lifetime

Advanced Open Water Diver

Lifetime

Rescue Diver

Lifetime

Nitrox/Specialty Courses

Lifetime

Emergency First Aid/CPR

24 months (requires renewal)

Divemaster/Instructor

Requires active status renewal

The only exception is first aid and CPR training. If you are a Rescue Diver, your diving certification stays valid, but your first aid component needs to be renewed every 24 months.

Can I Dive in Koh Tao With an Old Certification?

Can I Dive in Koh Tao With an Old Certification

Yes, you can. Koh Tao dive centers, including La Bombona Diving, accept certifications from all major agencies. RAID, PADI, SSI, NAUI, all are welcome. The logo on your card does not matter.

What matters is your recent dive history.

When you arrive at our dive center, we will ask you two simple questions:

  1. When did you last dive?
  2. How many dives do you have in total?

If it has been less than six months since your last dive and you feel comfortable in the water, you can join most of our fun dives without any issue.

If it has been longer than six to twelve months, or if you feel unsure about your skills, we will recommend a refresher dive in Koh Tao before heading to open water sites.

What Is a Scuba Refresher Dive?

Can I Dive in Koh Tao With an Old Certification

A scuba refresher course is a structured session that helps you rebuild your skills and confidence before returning to open water diving.

It is not a new certification course. You do not need to start from scratch. It is a guided, low-pressure experience where you review the basics and practice key skills in the water.

At La Bombona Diving, our refresher program is called the Reboot Course.

What Is the La Bombona Reboot Course?

What Is the La Bombona Reboot Course

The Reboot Course is La Bombona’s dedicated diving refresh program for certified divers who are returning to the water after a break. It is designed to help you rediscover your love for diving and get comfortable underwater again.

The course costs 2,500 THB and runs from 9:30 am to approximately 5:30 pm. Everything you need is included.

What is Included

  • Complete diving equipment rental
  • Theory lesson
  • Skill practice session in shallow water
  • Fun dive
  • Reboot certification
  • Boat trip on our private boat
  • Snacks and refreshments on the boat (fruit, cookies, tea, and coffee)

How the Day Looks

9:30 am – Theory Reboot

We go through the basic concepts of diving theory together. You probably remember most of it, but some things may feel a little rusty. This is a great time to ask questions and build your confidence before getting in the water.

11:45 am – Set Sail

We head out on our private boat to the dive site. Your instructor will explain the site and what marine life to expect. Enjoy the snacks and take in the views on the way out.

1:00 pm – Skill Session

Time to get in the water. In shallow water, your instructor guides you through the core skills you need to feel safe and confident. Mask clearing, buoyancy control, regulator recovery, and more. Once you are comfortable with all of them, you move into the dive.

3:00 pm – Fun Dive

With your skills refreshed and your confidence back, you explore Koh Tao’s beautiful marine life. This is the part where you remember why you got certified in the first place.

Who Should Take the Reboot Course?

You should consider the Reboot Course at La Bombona Diving if:

  • You have not dived in six months or more
  • You feel nervous or uncertain about getting back in the water
  • You struggle to remember how to set up your gear
  • You have fewer than 20 lifetime dives
  • Your last dive was in a very different environment and Koh Tao’s open water feels like a big step
  • You are planning more advanced dives like Sail Rock and want to feel fully prepared

There is no shame in doing a refresher. It is the smart, responsible choice. Even experienced divers do a skills check after a long break.

Diving After a Long Break: What to Expect

Diving After a Long Break: What to Expect

Diving is a physical skill. Like swimming, cycling, or driving, your body remembers the basics, but the fine details can fade.

After a long break, divers commonly notice:

  • Buoyancy feels harder to control
  • Equalizing takes more effort
  • Gear assembly feels less automatic
  • Being underwater feels unfamiliar or slightly anxious

This is completely normal. It does not mean you have forgotten everything. It just means your muscle memory needs a little reminder.

Most returning divers find that after one guided skills session and a fun dive, things start to click again. The Reboot Course is designed to make that process smooth and enjoyable.

Can I Dive Koh Tao’s Best Sites With an Old Certification?

Yes, with the right preparation.

Koh Tao has dive sites for all skill levels. Sites like Twins and White Rock are perfect for divers returning after a long break. They are shallow, calm, and full of marine life.

Sites like Sail Rock, one of Thailand’s top dive spots, require a bit more comfort underwater. We recommend at least a refresher dive before heading to sites like these if you have been out of the water for a long time.

Our instructors at La Bombona Diving will always recommend the right dive plan for your current skill level. We do not push divers into situations they are not ready for.

What If I Lost My Dive Card?

Do not worry. Your certification record is stored digitally by your issuing agency.

If you lost your card, contact your agency (RAID, PADI, SSI, etc.) to get a replacement. Most agencies offer digital cards you can store on your phone.

If you arrive in Koh Tao without your card, let us know. In most cases, we can verify your certification online as long as you remember which agency certified you and the name on the card.
